Our Story

How it all started...

In the late 1700s, Kentucky was a frontier of opportunity and hardship. Methodist preacher Joseph Ferguson arrived in Nelson County in 1784, driven by faith and a calling to minister to the settlers. By 1790, Ferguson organized a small gathering in his home, marking the humble beginnings of what would become Woodlawn Beech Fork United Methodist Church. This early community grew into Ferguson’s Chapel, a spiritual haven that nurtured generations of believers.

Expanding the vision...

Throughout the 1800s, Ferguson’s Chapel became central to the Salt River Circuit, one of Kentucky Methodism’s most challenging missions. Influential preachers like Francis Asbury and Peter Cartwright frequently preached here, strengthening the congregation through spiritual renewal and resilience. By 1908, responding to the community’s growth and changing needs, the church relocated and was reborn as Woodlawn Methodist Episcopal Church – South, reflecting a renewed commitment to serving the community.

Where we are headed...

Today, we build upon a rich legacy of faithfulness and community outreach. Embracing our heritage of resilience and adaptability, Woodlawn continues to grow spiritually and serve passionately. Guided by the example of early Methodist pioneers, we remain dedicated to sharing the love of Christ and fostering spiritual growth, ensuring our church remains a beacon of hope and faithfulness for generations to come.
